2008 A group exhibition and a film programme
A curatorial project consisting of a group exhibition at Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam and a film programme at Maison DesCartes in Amsterdam, in collaboration with artist/curator Delphine Bedel and Jelle Bouwhuis, curator of SMBA.
‘Beyond Paradise’ addresses the cultural and social changes that have altered our perspectives on tourism. As sociologist John Urry described in his breakthrough publication The Tourist Gaze of 1990, visual culture is central to the tourist experience. It could also be stated that the tourist industry, global mobility and media consumption and especially their abundant visual culture shape our vision of contemporary society.
Exhibition featured works by Bik Van der Pol, Patricia Esquivias, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Mustafa Hulusi, Arnout Killian, Matthieu Laurette, Sascha Pohle, Lisl Ponger and Erkan Özgen & Sener Özmen.
Film programme featured films and videos by Kamal Aljafari, Olivo Barbieri, Bik Van der Pol, Mounir Fatmi, Kai-Ting Lin, Quirine Racké & Helena Muskens and Kwang-Ju Son.
