Inspired by built environments and their representations, I document video and photographic images as well as collecting found material of urban landscapes, including cities, suburbs, zoos, museums and theaters to present the ideals and paradoxes behind the imagery.
I take the images out of the original contexts and place them in the new to create another landscape that is edited or often times composed with other images that share the same function. The outcome without a narrative exaggerates the certain conditions of the places I observe.
In recent years I am increasingly intrigued by representation of nature, such as theatrical design of parks and zoos and displays at natural historical museums. These representations are often based on the conception of ‘nature’, thus more of cultural and social production. There is no such scenery like diorama, which depicts the natural habitat of certain species, exists naturally. What we see on these contradiction-free stages is no more than our relationship to the nature and eventually our limitations within this relationship.
